Lift For Life Academy High School students are learning about the world around them. Thanks to the efforts of teacher Margene Jerrolds, seven Academy 9th graders recently participated in a forum sponsored by the Pulitzer Center, in which they learned about the importance of water and its scarcity in parts of Africa.

From Ken Dobbins, President of Southeast Missouri State University:As sponsors of the Lift For Life Academy charter for several years, we at Southeast Missouri State University continue to be pleased with the progress being made by the Academy, and are excited to see dynamic plans for further development of its physical plant and enhanced educational opportunities for its students. Southeast staff members have visited often to stay in contact with the Academy's faculty and staff. Most recently, our Board of Regents and executive staff toured the facility to meet faculty, staff, and students and observe the Academy in operation on a typical day in the classrooms. We look forward to continuing to help these dedicated individuals with their ongoing good work.
Lift For Life Academy was the first independent charter school to open in St. Louis. When it opened in August 2000, LFLA was sometimes the school of last resort for students who had “fallen through the cracks” in public schools. Many were reading well below their grade level, some had learning disabilities that hadn’t been properly addressed, some just didn’t seem to see the point of going to school. But the Academy faculty believed in our students, and along with teaching them language arts, math and science, they taught the students to believe in themselves. It worked!
Today, Lift For Life Academy is a school of choice for city families looking for a creative, motivating alternative to public middle schools, and soon, we'll be able to offer that same alternative for high school. Lift For Life Academy will offer 9th grade in Fall 2008 and will add a grade each year with the plan to have a full four-year high school by Fall 2011.
Students are motivated to come to school – daily attendance averages over 93 percent, as compared to 83 percent* in St. Louis Public Schools. Student test scores are climbing. Of the 73 students in the 2006 graduating class, 88 percent were accepted to their high schools of choice, with the other students going to their neighborhood high schools.
Our dedicated faculty and creative approach to learning sets Lift For Life Academy apart. Whether the subject is language arts, physical education or even after-school activities, we pride ourselves on our ability to reach and motivate our students.
